Staff Software Engineer - Tax Credits in USA

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and test Gusto core products.
  • Develop scalable tax-credit discovery and self-service experiences for small-business customers.
  • Own complex, multi-quarter engineering projects and deliver measurable customer impact at scale.
  • Work across product, data, design, platform engineering, and business teams to prototype, iterate, and launch solutions.
  • Mentor engineers and help solve complex technical problems.
  • Contribute to large-scale refactors and address performance and reliability issues.
  • Use and evaluate AI tools and emerging AI frameworks to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver product capabilities safely.

Requirements

  • Typically 8+ years of software development experience.
  • Experience building scalable solutions that eliminate customer pain and create memorable customer experiences.
  • Experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver product capabilities.
  • Curiosity and experimentation with emerging AI frameworks, including evaluating and scaling AI use safely across teams.
  • Experience owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems and create measurable impact at scale.
  • Experience with large-scale refactors, performance and reliability issues, and end-to-end ownership of a product area.
  • Ability to mentor engineers and maximize their performance and impact.
  • Experience in or interest in working with Ruby on Rails.
  • Ability to build well-structured, maintainable, and well-documented code.
  • Ability to communicate effectively across engineering teams and with business stakeholders.
  • Appreciation for a collaborative, test-driven environment.
