Staff Software Engineer, Containers in USA new

Responsibilities

  • Architect and deliver major Chainguard Containers features and services from concept through production and initial customer use.
  • Lead small sub-teams of two to four engineers and make high-impact architectural and roadmap trade-offs.
  • Build hardened container images, image build systems, registry capabilities, distribution services, and adoption tooling.
  • Use AI coding agents in development, review, and operations while establishing safe team practices.
  • Work across teams and with customers, support, and go-to-market stakeholders to solve product problems.
  • Mentor engineers through design reviews and pair work and raise engineering practices across the team.
  • Partner with Product and engineering leadership on roadmap and technical direction.
  • Maintain owned systems through observability, on-call, and recurring-issue remediation.
  • Write design notes, decision records, and status updates for a distributed remote team.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience building and operating software used by paying customers.
  • Experience leading at least one multi-engineer project end to end.
  • Architectural depth in Go, including designing a Go service from scratch.
  • Strong API design, database, caching, and cloud infrastructure experience with GCP or AWS.
  • Deep knowledge of containers, container registries, the OCI image format, and Kubernetes.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and improving technical practices across a team.
  • Experience working on a distributed, remote-first team and excellent written English.
  • Preferred: software supply chain security experience involving SBOMs, Sigstore, or SLSA.
  • Preferred: familiarity with Wolfi, apko, and melange.
  • Preferred: Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code experience.
  • Preferred: authorship or maintenance of open-source projects.
