Staff Software Engineer, Backend in Canada

Responsibilities

  • Partner with product management, engineering directors, and principal architects to translate strategic objectives into scalable technical roadmaps.
  • Drive collaboration with Product, Design, and QA to deliver critical engineering initiatives.
  • Lead the design and implementation of features and services within the core Java platform from conception through deployment.
  • Define engineering best practices and contribute to technical designs, proposals, and architectural decisions.
  • Mentor Staff and Senior engineers, guide technical design reviews, and raise engineering standards across the organization.
  • Develop maintainable software with comprehensive test coverage and improve testing and CI/CD strategies.
  • Create technical documentation and promote knowledge sharing.
  • Champion AI-native engineering practices using AI coding assistants while maintaining security and code quality.
  • Identify emerging trends and prototype solutions in device security and AI-native development.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of software development experience designing and building scalable, high-performance server-side features with Java and Spring.
  • Deep experience with Postgres or MySQL, including schema design and query optimization.
  • Extensive experience designing, building, and securing RESTful APIs for large-scale systems.
  • Expertise in caching, asynchronous processing, and multi-threading.
  • Understanding of design patterns, scalability patterns, security engineering, and object-oriented principles.
  • Experience with CI/CD, automated testing, and fast-paced agile environments.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to influence technical direction.
  • Deep understanding of endpoint security concepts, including TPM, Secure Enclave, device management/MDM protocols, and endpoint detection.
  • Conceptual understanding of how iOS, Android, Windows, and macOS security features report state to the cloud.
  • Proficiency with AI coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot.
  • Preferred experience with anomaly detection systems, risk systems, cloud security, identity, authentication protocols, or Identity and Access Management technologies.
  • Preferred understanding of FIDO, U2F, WebAuthn, SSO, SAML, OAuth, and federation.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity principles and secure coding practices; CISSP or Security+ certification is advantageous.
  • Experience with ReactJS, gRPC API development, or microservice architecture is advantageous.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
