Staff Engineer, Compute Foundation in Australia

Responsibilities

  • Lead large, ambiguous infrastructure projects from design through production launch, adoption, and long-term operation.
  • Set technical direction for machine-image construction, validation, distribution, operation, containerization, and host-based infrastructure.
  • Design validation, staged rollout, observability, rollback, and guardrail systems that make fleet-wide changes safe and predictable.
  • Lead incident response and reduce operational toil while improving reliability, security, debuggability, and maintainability.
  • Partner with infrastructure, security, compliance, and service teams on cross-organizational technical direction.
  • Lead design reviews, establish host-infrastructure standards, mentor senior engineers, and contribute through coding, code review, debugging, and operational leadership.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience designing and shipping large-scale production infrastructure systems.
  • Experience leading ambiguous infrastructure projects end-to-end, coordinating cross-team dependencies and migrations across many consuming teams.
  • Deep expertise in Linux systems, including boot and initialization, processes, networking, filesystems, storage, packages, and production debugging.
  • Strong foundations in cloud compute infrastructure, including machine images, virtual machines, autoscaling fleets, launch configuration, block storage, IAM, health evaluation, and multi-region operations in AWS, Azure, or an equivalent environment.
  • Experience with fleet-scale image, host-management, configuration-management, or infrastructure-provisioning systems.
  • Experience with automated validation, canarying, progressive rollout, health evaluation, rollback, and blast-radius containment for infrastructure changes.
  • Strong service-reliability and operational-excellence background, including incident response, toil reduction, and building reliable, debuggable, maintainable systems.
  • Track record of broad technical impact across complex systems, including code review, mentorship, and setting team-level technical direction.
  • Preferred: experience with image-based, immutable, or declarative infrastructure platforms; containers and Kubernetes; large-scale Linux fleets; progressive delivery and fleet-health systems; configuration-management modernization; OS security patching, software supply-chain security, artifact provenance, and developer self-service platforms.
