Staff Embedded Software Engineer in USA

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and deliver features across the embedded network stack, including reliability, redundancy, performance, traffic shaping, queue management, messaging, and session APIs.
  • Own network software architectures and help define the technical roadmap for current and future surgical robotic systems.
  • Set technical direction and standards for Layer 2/Layer 3 software, Ethernet MAC and PHY drivers, and deterministic real-time paths for safety-critical data.
  • Lead design and code reviews, mentor senior and mid-level engineers, and remain hands-on in high-risk code.
  • Serve as the technical authority for hardware integration and lead escalations involving complex hardware-software networking failures.
  • Coordinate with application, algorithms, FPGA, electrical, clinical, and manufacturing teams to resolve architectural tradeoffs.
  • Influence build-versus-buy decisions, vendor silicon selection, middleware selection, and technical-debt investments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with 10+ years or master’s degree with 8+ years of industry experience in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership owning complex-system architecture, mentoring engineers, and influencing cross-organizational direction.
  • Expert knowledge of all seven OSI networking layers, TCP/IP internals, Ethernet switching fabric design, and C/C++ embedded development.
  • Deep experience architecting and delivering high-speed networking software, including low-level Ethernet MAC/PHY driver development.
  • Experience with Linux and embedded RTOS environments, memory management, concurrency, and interrupt handling.
  • Experience using and driving adoption of new engineering tools and technologies, including AI coding assistants.
  • Preferred experience with platform roadmaps for shipping hardware products, schematics and datasheets, IEEE 802.1 TSN/AVB, high-availability redundancy, Automotive Ethernet, L2 switching, RTOS and Linux driver development, functional safety standards, and embedded network security.

Salary: $224k - $322k/yr
