Responsibilities

Design and engineer components of Astronomer’s context layer for data modeling, semantic search, retrieval, and code generation.
Build applied AI systems using LLMs, embeddings, and retrieval techniques for data practitioners and developer tools.
Solve information retrieval and search problems at global scale using knowledge of data pipelines.
Collaborate with R&D and product teams to turn early research concepts into product experiences.
Influence the architecture and technical vision for AI-driven data products.
Represent Astronomer through open-source contributions, technical talks, and publications.

Requirements

5–8 years of software engineering experience with Python or Go.
Experience with LLMs, vector databases, embeddings, or other applied AI areas, or a strong desire to learn them.
Interest in improving data professionals’ workflows and comfort with early-stage product development and ambiguity.
Strong collaboration and communication skills, including the ability to explain complex systems to technical and non-technical audiences.
Experience or interest in search, information retrieval, large-scale data infrastructure, developer tools, machine learning infrastructure, or agentic systems is preferred.
Familiarity with Apache Airflow or other orchestration tools and demonstrated open-source contributions are preferred.
