Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Product, users, and engineers to shape requirements, define trade-offs, and deliver projects in shippable iterations.
  • Design and implement backend features across GitLab’s monolith, including GraphQL, REST APIs, and real-time subscriptions.
  • Optimize PostgreSQL queries and writes at scale through indexing, denormalization, partitioning, and workload migration to Elasticsearch or ClickHouse where appropriate.
  • Build and improve real-time work item functionality, automated test suites, test infrastructure, feature-flagged rollouts, and developer workflows.
  • Lead projects involving multiple engineers and mentor engineers and open-source contributors through reviews, pairing, feedback, and contribution support.
  • Participate in on-call rotations, troubleshoot production issues, contribute to root cause analysis, and improve observability.

Requirements

  • Proficiency with Ruby and Ruby on Rails and experience maintaining backend features in a large, mature codebase.
  • Strong PostgreSQL skills, including query and write optimization, indexing, denormalization, and partitioning at scale.
  • Full-stack experience with a current backend focus and experience designing and evolving scalable, backward-compatible GraphQL and REST APIs.
  • Experience improving large automated test suites with attention to test performance and reliability.
  • Experience leading and supporting other engineers, including driving multi-engineer projects, mentoring, code reviews, feedback, hiring, and contributor development.
  • Strong product mindset and written and verbal communication skills for an asynchronous, distributed environment.
  • Experience integrating AI into development workflows or developing AI-powered features, or experience with Elasticsearch, ClickHouse, or Python, is preferred.
