Principal Engineer - Payments Products & Platform in Australia new

Responsibilities

  • Set technical strategy and long-term architecture across the Payments Products & Experiences or Payments Platform portfolio.
  • Design and run large-scale distributed systems with attention to reliability, performance, and cost.
  • Evaluate legacy payment systems and decide whether to extend, migrate, or rebuild them.
  • Remain hands-on through pairing, technical spikes, and coding across web, API, and data layers.
  • Shape API-first payment platforms, provider integrations, payment methods, global payment rails, and ledger capabilities.
  • Mentor Staff and Senior engineers and contribute to engineering standards, architecture, and best practices.
  • Partner with product, engineering, and senior stakeholders and lead cross-team initiatives.
  • Design and analyze A/B tests and model the use of AI tooling to automate tasks and improve engineering outcomes.

Requirements

  • Deep experience designing and operating large-scale distributed systems in production.
  • Fluency in at least one modern backend language, SQL, NoSQL data stores, and cloud-native platforms, ideally AWS.
  • Experience working across web, API, and data layers with API-first design practices.
  • Ability to make practical architectural decisions in legacy-heavy systems while staying hands-on.
  • Strong interest in using AI tooling to automate tasks and improve engineering outcomes.
  • Proven ability to design and analyze A/B tests that drive product usage.
  • Payments or fintech experience is a plus.
  • Ability to mentor Staff and Senior engineers and influence cross-team technical initiatives.
