Lead Software Engineer (Hybrid) in UK

Responsibilities

  • Lead high-stakes software consulting engagements from discovery through production.
  • Make immediate contributions to client projects and build trust with stakeholders.
  • Lead architecture and software design discussions and balance technology choices with delivery needs.
  • Collaborate on systems covering the full ML lifecycle, including data ingestion, preprocessing, model deployment, integration, and performance monitoring.
  • Lead teams, maintain healthy prioritized backlogs, and manage high-level project roadmaps for large engagements.
  • Identify, mitigate, and resolve blockers while evaluating risks and presenting potential solutions to clients.
  • Maintain relationships with client technical leaders and provide regular project status updates.
  • Lead retrospectives and feedback conversations, document outcomes, and drive action items.
  • Mentor colleagues, share knowledge, lead or design workshops, contribute to hiring, and represent 8th Light in the technology community.

Requirements

  • Typically 7+ years of repeated success across a variety of software projects.
  • Experience leading high-stakes consulting engagements from discovery to production.
  • Production-quality coding experience with a variety of languages and frameworks, including Java, C#/.NET, Python, TypeScript, JavaScript, React, Go, Ruby, Scala, R, and SQL.
  • Experience building or integrating AI/ML-powered features such as recommendation engines, NLP models, computer vision, or predictive analytics.
  • Experience with automated testing, debugging, refactoring, Git, macOS/Linux, and CI/CD.
  • Experience addressing architecture-level concerns including scalability, security, reliability, and performance.
  • Ability to lead architecture, make recommendations under ambiguity, mentor colleagues, communicate with stakeholders, and balance technical decisions with product and user needs.
  • Strongly preferred experience in platform engineering, data engineering with Databricks, production agentic systems, RAG pipelines, vector search, LangChain, LlamaIndex, CrewAI, AutoGen, n8n, DevSecOps, DevOps, MLOps, and infrastructure as code.
