Role Description

We are looking for an Intermediate Developer who can independently deliver well-scoped features and bug fixes in a mature Laravel application. This person should be comfortable maintaining existing systems while helping us refactor a large legacy codebase toward a cleaner, modern architecture..

You’ll collaborate with a small, creative team where your ideas matter. This role offers plenty of room to learn, experiment, and grow your skills while contributing to meaningful software that impacts real schools.

What You'll Work With

  • PHP 8 and Laravel
  • The TALL stack: Tailwind CSS, Alpine.js, Laravel, and Livewire
  • Legacy frontend code using jQueryBootstrapSass, and Blade
  • PostgreSQL and Eloquent
  • Redis queues, scheduled jobs, and Laravel Horizon
  • Pest and automated browser testing
  • Third-party APIs, webhooks, imports, and exports
  • Laravel ForgeSentryAWS S3, and Git
  • AI-assisted and agentic coding tools

What We're Looking For

  • Roughly 5 or more years of professional PHP or Laravel experience, or equivalent practical experience
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented programming and SOLID principles
  • Experience organizing code into small, focused, reusable classes with clear responsibilities
  • Practical experience building responsive and accessible interfaces with the TALL stack
  • Experience maintaining frontend applications built with jQuery and Bootstrap
  • Ability to safely modernize legacy code incrementally while preserving existing behaviour
  • Familiarity with common Laravel patterns, including:
    • Thin controllers and Livewire components
    • Service and Action classes
    • DTOs and typed data boundaries
    • Form Requests, policies, events, listeners, and jobs
    • Eloquent relationships, transactions, and query optimization
  • Experience creating reusable Blade components using Atomic Design principles
  • Ability to write focused feature and unit tests with Pest
  • Experience debugging queues, scheduled jobs, external integrations, and production issues
  • Understanding of authentication, authorization, validation, tenant scoping, and secure data handling
  • Experience using AI-assisted and agentic coding tools to investigate problems, implement changes, write tests, and document decisions
  • Ability to critically review AI-generated code for correctness, security, maintainability, and alignment with the project’s architecture
  • Strong written communication and the ability to explain technical decisions and tradeoffs clearly

Nice to Have

  • Experience with modular Laravel architecture, including organizing features into self-contained modules and loading them through service providers
  • Experience with education technology or student information systems
  • Experience with payment, messaging, attendance, enrollment, or parent-facing applications
  • Familiarity with Laravel Pennant, Sanctum, Horizon, Spatie Laravel Data, and feature flags
  • Experience integrating with systems such as Skyward, Aspire, OneRoster, or similar platforms
  • Experience with CSV or Excel imports and exports
  • Experience monitoring applications with Sentry and managing deployments through Laravel Forge
