Firmware Engineer - Hands in USA new

Responsibilities

  • Develop, deploy, and maintain firmware for dexterous robot hands, including motor control, sensor I/O, and real-time communications.
  • Implement current, position, and torque control for the small motors driving the hands.
  • Develop firmware for distributed embedded networks connecting multiple microcontrollers.
  • Build and execute Hardware-in-the-Loop and Software-in-the-Loop tests for performance, safety, and reliability.
  • Support firmware quality, telemetry, diagnostics, field performance, and root-cause analysis for deployed fleets.
  • Bring up hand hardware and collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers from prototype through production.
  • Participate in code reviews, design reviews, pair debugging, and discussions about tooling, processes, and firmware patterns.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience; a master’s degree focused on controls, motor drives, or embedded systems is valued.
  • 0–2 years of relevant embedded software experience, including internships, co-ops, research, or significant academic or personal projects.
  • Working proficiency in C/C++ and familiarity with Python, Docker, and Git.
  • Exposure to resource-constrained embedded hardware and real-time embedded firmware concepts.
  • Familiarity with BLDC motor control, distributed embedded networks, and embedded communication protocols including SPI, UART, RS485, and CAN.
  • Experience deploying firmware to embedded devices through internships, projects, or coursework.
  • Hardware debugging skills using oscilloscopes and logic analyzers, plus the ability to interpret electrical schematics and hardware datasheets.
  • Ability to collaborate with mechanical engineers on integrated electromechanical assemblies.
  • Experience with humanoid robotics, prosthetics, dexterous manipulation, compact electromechanical systems, EtherCAT, TI C2000 microcontrollers, safety-critical standards, tactile or force sensors, MATLAB/Simulink, firmware tooling, build systems, or developer infrastructure is valued.
