Design Engineer in USA

  • Palo Alto, CA

Responsibilities

  • Architect and build internal systems and increasingly agentic tooling for Nubank’s design and research function.
  • Build NuBrain, a global knowledge system that consolidates more than 30 local repositories and optimizes retrieval, context, and token consumption.
  • Create a design-quality measurement platform that produces system-generated quality scores for user experiences.
  • Evaluate approximately 100 locally built AI solutions, standardize appropriate tools, and retire duplicative solutions.
  • Translate designers’ and researchers’ needs into scoped, buildable systems and choose the appropriate implementation shape.
  • Stand up or reuse infrastructure, write code, ship tools, and instrument them with metrics and observability.
  • Own the Design Center of Excellence tooling roadmap, prioritization, sequencing, and delivery.
  • Serve as the technical voice within the design organization and make engineering trade-offs understandable to non-engineers.

Requirements

  • Deep experience building systems that other teams build on.
  • Track record architecting UX systems, including design systems, component platforms, UI frameworks, or front-end infrastructure used by many teams.
  • Experience using AI to build compelling examples and sophisticated systems.
  • Ideally, experience building agents, tooling, or infrastructure that helps designers work more effectively.
  • Ability to navigate stakeholders, lead projects, and drive work independently without direct authority or a project manager.
  • Evidence of shipped work through GitHub repositories, live tools, demos, or systems that can be presented and explained.
  • This is an engineering-first role and requires a high engineering bar; a design portfolio is not requested.
