Backend Software Engineer in Australia new

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, test, and ship maintainable backend services and APIs from ambiguous problems through production.
  • Work with Java, Kotlin, Spring Boot, Postgres, RabbitMQ, and Redis on Megaport’s core platform.
  • Deploy and operate services on Kubernetes and AWS, with GitHub Actions supporting delivery.
  • Translate business requirements into technical solutions and challenge unclear requirements constructively.
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, and business stakeholders to build reliable, secure, and performant systems.
  • Write JUnit and Kotest tests and participate in code reviews as both an author and reviewer.
  • Improve architecture, engineering processes, design patterns, and technical-debt management.

Requirements

  • A few years of experience building backend services in Java or Kotlin.
  • Comfort working with Spring and understanding its role in application development.
  • Knowledge of relational databases and data modeling for query efficiency.
  • Clear communication skills for explaining technical trade-offs to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong problem-solving, critical-thinking, and ownership skills.
  • Kotlin experience or willingness to learn it is beneficial.
  • Experience with Go or Terraform, including Terraform Provider development, is beneficial.
  • Experience with Hibernate or other ORMs is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of AWS, Azure, or GCP products or APIs is beneficial.
  • Interest in networking concepts such as IP routing or MPLS is beneficial.
